Tuesday Tip: You May Already Have a Dashcam

phone used as dash cam in mountToday’s iPhone and Android devices have more computing power than the computers that landed the Apollo 11 mission on the moon just over 50 years ago. So, when you decide it is time to upgrade to a new phone, don’t casually discard it. A great use for your old “Apollo landing machine” is to turn it into a dashcam for your car. This is, of course, assuming you haven’t already promised it to a younger member of the family.

Since today’s devices have high quality cameras in them and a decent amount of storage capacity, it’s a great way to repurpose it. You also won’t need to worry about an Internet connection or a keeping a SIM card since all you are using is the installed camera and video recorder.

You may need to buy an inexpensive window mount for your car ($13.49 on Amazon). And you may also need to run a cord to keep it powered on if it’s like my old phone and doesn’t hold much of a charge anymore.

It could save you one day if you ever get in an accident and need to prove that the other driver was at fault.
