Building on licensing updates for Europe last year, Microsoft is now extending those changes to Microsoft 365, Office 365, and Teams globally. The company’s goal is to ensure transparency and consistency for customers worldwide.
In essence, as of April 1, 2024, Teams will no longer be a part of Office 365 E3, Office 365 E5, Microsoft 365 E3, and Microsoft 365 E5 for new subscribers.
Companies currently subscribed to existing Microsoft packages can continue to use, renew, upgrade and add seats to their current plans. If they want to switch to the new plan, they can do so when their contract is up for renewal. But keep in mind, if you decide to go with a version that does not include Teams, you will not be able to change your mind later and add it back into your package. It will be a separate purchase and contract.
New commercial subscribers that want Teams as part of their package will now need to purchase either Office 365 or Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Teams Enterprise.
New small and medium business customers will need to choose between the existing Microsoft 365 Business Basic, Standard, or Premium suites with Teams or the new versions of those suites without Teams.
These changes only apply to business packages. Currently consumer, academic, government and nonprofit applications are not impacted.
