NFMGMA January 2016 Educational Session – 10 Mistakes We Keep Making as Practice Managers

By Richard Stokes

Now that 2016 is here, it’s time to dust off the haze from the holidays and get back to work….sigh! Many of you may have already reflected on 2015 and made resolutions/plans for what you want to do differently/better for this year. If that’s you – well done! For those that haven’t, then perhaps this presentation will help provide the motivation you are looking for. If you’re not much into making changes, come anyway for the networking and door prizes ($$).

Healthcare IT IssuesWe’re kicking off our January meeting at the North Fulton MGMA with a presentation from Kyle Matthews, CEO of Cardiovascular Associates in Mesa, Arizona. As the title suggests, he is going to dig into a lot of different areas that as Practice Managers, you will be able to identify with.

They include:

  • Scheduling
  • HR
  • Billing
  • IT (my favorite)
  • Employee feedback surveys
  • Finance
  • Physician compensation
  • Scribes
  • Nurse Practitioners

Constructive criticism is good so let’s be open to learning something new. Kyle says he’ll talk about the common mistakes observed in each of these areas and offer suggestions on how to improve performance and efficiency. He even promises that we’ll have a bit of a laugh along the way.

This is a really important topic for 2016 because the Practice Manager position now encompasses so many areas such as strategic and financial planning, HR, regulatory compliance, operations and more. Kyle says that understanding how large the job has become and how to tackle the top issues is paramount for the success of the person and the practice.

Keep CalmSome of the new knowledge you can expect to take away from the meeting includes:

  • Resources to deal with any problem that arises
  • How to turn mistakes into actionable improvements
  • How interacting with your staff on a more regular basis helps you and the practice
  • How surrounding yourself with the right team leads to success

When you get back to your practice, you’ll be ready to take action. Kyle hopes that with what you have learned you will put into practice the following strategies:

  • Truly evaluate the interactions/relationships with your staff
  • Reevaluate the role IT plays in the practice
  • Make sure you do one thing every day that makes you happy

Kyle is a great resource, so be sure to ask questions while he is with us.

As always, this is going to be a very informative session so make sure you register today. Feel free to share this with your peers and colleagues and invite them to attend as well: North Fulton MGMA registration.
