Tuesday Tip: Don’t Forget to Restart Your Computer Every Few Days

Computer keyboard with time to restart cardShould you leave your computer running all the time? The answer is no, you should shut down and restart your computer every few days. I’m guilty of leaving my computer on for days on end, so learn from me.

Here’s why you don’t want to leave your computer on all the time:

  • Both Windows PCs and Macs collect digital junk from poorly written programs in their RAM storage areas over time. RAM is an acronym for random-access memory – in essence, your computer’s short-term memory.
  • Apps that cause memory leaks. Memory leaks are from apps leaving parts of themselves in the RAM when you close them out.
  • Random glitches occur with power fluctuations and can cause data issues with some of the system’s RAM memory.

While these RAM issues typically go unnoticed, they will over time cause vulnerabilities, system slow-downs, data losses, and random reboots, which will cause you headaches.

To remedy all of these problems, all you have to do is to restart your computer once per week. I like to do it on Fridays. As I am shutting down mentally from my work week, I give my computer a rest as well.
