Tuesday Tip: Stop Typing Passwords and Meet the Passkey

Woman interacting with futuristic passkey icon. Let’s talk passwords. We forget them, reuse them, and type them into fake login pages. There’s a better option on your phone and computer right now, and most people aren’t using it. It’s called a passkey.

A passkey replaces your password with the same thing you already use to unlock your device: your fingerprint, your face, or your PIN. There’s nothing to remember, nothing to type, and nothing for a hacker to steal from a data breach.

The best part is that a passkey only works on the real website that created it. If you click a phishing link that takes you to a fake Microsoft or Amazon login page, your passkey won’t work there. A scammer can trick you into typing a password, but they can’t trick a passkey.

Google, Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, PayPal, and many banks already support passkeys. Setting one up takes about a minute:

  • Sign in to the account and go to its Security or Login & Security settings.
  • Look for Passkeys (some sites call it “passkeys and security keys” or “ways to sign in”).
  • Select Create a passkey and follow the prompt to confirm with your fingerprint, face, or PIN.
  • The next time you sign in, your device will simply ask you to confirm it’s you.

Keep your password and recovery options in place for now, in case you lose or replace your phone. Start with the accounts that matter most, like email, banking, and Amazon. Your company’s IT team manages passkeys for your work Microsoft 365 account.
