Tuesday Tip: Turn Off Automatic AirPlay to Protect Your Privacy

Apple AirPlay logo. With the latest iOS 26.2.1 update, Apple quietly re-enabled Automatic AirPlay, so your iPhone may now try to connect to nearby TVs or AirPlay devices on its own, often without asking first. While that feels convenient at home, it creates real privacy risks in shared spaces like coffee shops, hotels, offices, and Airbnbs.

What can go wrong:

  • Your iPhone can auto-cast to a nearby device without your knowledge.
  • Sensitive content might suddenly appear on someone else’s screen.
  • If you’ve previously paired with a device your phone can quietly reconnect.
  • In rare but real scenarios, a malicious AirPlay device on a public network could try to trick your phone into streaming data.

Take back control by changing one setting:

  • Open Settings,
  • Tap General,
  • Select AirPlay & Continuity,
  • Tap Automatically AirPlay
  • Set to Neveror Ask.

Turn off Automatic AirPlay and block accidental leaks of private information to stay safe on public or shared networks.
