Not all cyber risks come from obvious places. In a recent example, researchers showed how “smart” light bulbs can be exploited to gain access to an entire network. “Smart” simply means a device can connect directly to the Internet or to your environment through Wi‑Fi.
Here’s what happened:
- Researchers took control of a smart light bulb through its wireless
connection. - They used it as a jumping-off point to move laterally through the
network, accessing security cameras and other connected devices. - Once on the network, they could deploy malware and gain broader
access to systems more easily.
Devices like smart light bulbs rarely get the same security attention as
laptops or servers, but they still sit on the network, making them an
attractive entry point for hackers. Reduce your risk by:
- Keeping firmware updated.
- Put IoT (Internet of Things) devices like bulbs, cameras, and
thermostats on a separate Wi‑Fi network, and make sure you know
how to change default passwords. - Research and choose brands that actively patch and support their products.
If a device connects to your network, even something as simple as a light bulb, it becomes a way into your network. Hackers are betting you aren’t treating them that way.
