Have you ever wondered whether your Google or Apple Map is showing you the most direct route to your destination? I assume my GPS shows the fastest route, but several factors go into creating the “best” route:
- Fuel-Efficient Defaults: Google Maps prioritizes a slightly longer path if it saves gas, even if it adds time.
- Traffic Redistribution: Apps deliberately balance traffic across multiple adjacent roads to keep overall city flow moving.
- Data Latency: Live traffic data updates dynamically. A sudden accident two miles ahead can force the app to switch your route mid-drive.
Google Maps favors fuel economy when arrival times are comparable. To force it to strictly prioritize time:
- Open Google Maps and tap your profile picture in the top right.
- Go to Settings > Navigation.
- Scroll down to the Route options section.
- Toggle off “Prefer fuel-efficient routes.”
To check that you haven’t accidentally restricted your path-finding choices:
- Google Maps: Go to Settings > Navigation and make sure options like Avoid tolls or Avoid ferries are off, unless you want them.
- Apple Maps: Open your iPhone’s Settings app > Maps > scroll down to Driving & Navigation and confirm you haven’t toggled off Tolls or Highways under the “Avoid” menu.
Neither app gets it right every time. Before you hit “Start,” check the alternative grey lines the map presents. Apps frequently list a faster route along a different path, and you must manually tap and select it if you want speed over eco-friendliness.
