Ever feel like your smart TV listens a little too closely? It might be! Many smart TVs come with settings that constantly listen and collect your data. Features like Automatic Content Recognition (ACR) come enabled by default, tracking what you watch and serving you targeted ads. Voice-activated microphones can also pick up your private conversations.
Here are some ways you can protect your privacy:
-
Disable ACR: Open your TV’s settings menu (often under Privacy, Support, or Terms & Conditions) and turn off ACR, Viewing Data, or Live Plus.
-
Turn off microphones: Disable voice recognition and voice assistant features in your settings and look for a microphone button or physical switch on your remote to shut it off.
-
Review permissions: Check your app permissions to see which apps access your microphone.
-
Disconnect from the internet: If you don’t use smart features, disconnect your TV from Wi-Fi entirely to stop all data transmission.
-
Use external devices: Stream through a dedicated device (Apple TV, Roku, Fire Stick) instead of your TV’s built-in apps.
Your TV may not literally eavesdrop on your conversations, but it is building a profile of your habits for advertising purposes.
