If your laptop has started nagging you about low storage, you might reach straight for the delete key and hope you don’t need those files later. Skip that step. Windows and Mac both include built-in tools that free up space automatically, without touching anything you actually use.
In Windows, Storage Sense runs quietly in the background. It clears out temporary files, empties items from your Recycle Bin once they pass a set age, and removes old file versions that Windows no longer needs. It leaves your documents, photos, and anything you’ve opened recently alone.
- Go to Settings > System > Storage.
- Turn on Storage Sense and set it to run automatically (weekly works well).
- Optionally, set the Recycle Bin to empty itself after 30 days.
Macs offer a similar feature called Optimized Storage. It moves older files you rarely use to iCloud, empties the Trash automatically after 30 days, and clears out clutter from apps you no longer use.
- Go to the Apple menu > About This Mac > Storage > Manage.
- Turn on Optimize Storage and Empty Trash Automatically.
- Check the Recommendations panel for one-click cleanup options.
A full hard drive doesn’t just trigger annoying pop-ups, it slows down updates, backups, and everyday performance. Turning on automatic storage management takes two minutes and heads off a much bigger headache later.
Once you turn on either tool, it needs no further attention. Set it up, then let your computer handle its own housekeeping.
