Tuesday Tip: Two Ways to End an Application When Your Computer Has Frozen

When an application on your computer has frozen you may have navigated to the Windows Task Manager, found the application in the list, and selected ‘end task.’ That can be time consuming. As an alternative, here are two quick ways to end the application immediately.

  1. While you are in the application that is frozen, press the ALT and F4 keys and the application will immediately shutdown.
  2. Create a shortcut so you can easily end an application. Here’s how to set this option up:
    • In the Windows explorer on your task bar type Settings, then look for the settings icon that looks like a cog. Click and it will take you into the system settings menu.

Task bar in Windows Explorer.

    • Under the System menu, look for the tab For developers

For Developers tab in WIndows Explorer.

    • Find the option that reads End Task and click the button to turn this feature on.

End Task tab in Windows Explorer.

    • The next time an application freezes, you can right click it from the taskbar at the bottom of or screen in Windows and then select End task.

Taskbar in Windows.

Be mindful, ending an application early may cause you to lose unsaved work.
