Tuesday Tip: Turo – The AirBNB for Cars

For the past year and a half, the car business has had an unprecedented decrease in production. With this, prices of new and pre-owned vehicles have sky-rocketed, and the availability of rentals has decreased tremendously, making car rentals unavailable and expensive at a time when more and more people want to finally travel again.

Enter Turo which allows for you to rent someone’s compact, minivan or Ferrari. It’s an awesome alternative to the big rental agencies and all their additional costs and fees. It also provides access to specialty and high-end cars that rental companies typically don’t have.

How it works: People who own a vehicle can join the service and rent their personal vehicle as needed. Renters connect directly with the vehicle owner on the app. Different levels of insurance are available, including the option to include theft and collision insurance.

Let’s say you have a pickup truck that you only use during the week, and you want to make a little money from it on the weekends. You take a few pictures, fill out the needed details on the Turo app, and indicate the times the truck is available to rent.

A customer that needs the truck can go to the app, see the times it is available and reach out to you on the app. Together, you’d arrange to meet and give them the key. The borrower is responsible for all damages and speeding tickets, and should return it with the same amount of gas as when they picked it up. Vehicle owners are expected to keep vehicle maintained up to Turo standards.

With good weather and travel increasing, people will find Turo very useful when they want to rent a compact, large SUV or something fun and flashy.
