SPAM emails clog our inboxes and annoy us daily. While tempting to click the “Unsubscribe” link in these messages, doing so can lead to unintended consequences.
- Clicking “Unsubscribe” in fraudulent emails won’t remove your address from scammers’ lists. Instead, it may:
- Confirm your email as valid and active, making it more valuable to scammers.
- Direct you to malicious websites to download malware or fall for scams.
- To effectively manage SPAM and unwanted emails:
- Mark them as SPAM or Junk.
- Delete without opening. If you accidentally open it, mark as SPAM/Junk and delete immediately.
Never click any links within these emails. If you mistakenly do click a link, follow the advice above and thoroughly scan your computer for malware.
Here’s an important distinction: the advice above only applies to unsolicited SPAM emails. Legitimate newsletter senders prefer you unsubscribe because:
-
- It prevents sending emails to uninterested recipients, improving their “Open Rates”
- Marking subscribed emails as SPAM negatively affects the newsletter’s deliverability to interested subscribers.
By following these guidelines, you protect yourself from potential threats and maintain the integrity of legitimate email communications.
