Tuesday Tip: Master Word Editing with This Simple Shortcut

Photo of a keyboard with a large blue button reading "oops". When you work in Microsoft Word, speed counts. Editing shouldn’t slow you down. Instead of tediously jabbing the Delete key to erase text one character at a time, put the CTRL + DELETE shortcut to work—this deletes the entire word to the right of your cursor instantly. This means faster edits whether cleaning up typos, refining rough notes, or paring down lengthy drafts.

  • Saves time by letting you remove full words with a single command instead of dozens of keystrokes.

  • Boosts efficiency. Quickly remove filler words or make structural edits while drafting emails, reports, or proposals.

  • Keeps you focused. You spend less time wrestling with text and more time shaping your ideas.

Just place the cursor before the word you want to erase and press CTRL + DELETE. The whole word and any adjacent spaces disappear. Working on a draft with lots of edits? This can be a huge time-saver.

Looking to delete a word to the left of the cursor instead? Use CTRL + BACKSPACE. This removes the word on the left, letting you clean up with the same efficiency.

Next time you’re editing in Word, try pressing CTRL + DELETE—you’ll be surprised at how much time and effort this little trick saves.
