Tuesday Tip: Spotting Deception in Digital Media

AI, artificial intelligence, and the concept of fake news, misinformation, and disinformation: The word misinformation in red text, surrounded by related keywords and warning signs in the background. AI tools can easily modify, enhance, and edit online media, making it simpler than ever for misinformation to spread. That’s why it’s important not to stop at asking if something is real or fake; instead, actively consider whether an image or video is trying to trick you.

KnowBe4 recommends the FAIK process—a homophone for FAKE. Whenever you encounter digital media, keep these steps in mind:

  • F – Freeze and feel: Take a moment to listen to your reaction. Is the media sparking strong emotions or stress?

  • A – Analyze: Look at what’s being claimed and think about the creator’s intention and what emotional buttons they might be pressing.

  • I – Investigate: Seek out confirmation from multiple trustworthy news sources. Track where the image or message originated, and verify key details.

  • K – Know and confirm: Stay alert to what’s actually true and what’s just partial truth or distortion. Knowing the bigger picture makes a difference.

The next time you get a text, email, or even a phone call, take a moment to check for signs of deception. Practicing these habits helps you protect yourself—and your organization—from falling for fake content.
