Losing access to your Apple Account can cause chaos in your life. To alleviate this, Apple created an optional recovery key feature to improve the security of your Apple ID Account. You can reset your password and access your account by using the recovery key, a randomly generated 28-character code.
Setting up the recovery key turns off Apple’s standard account recovery process. Instead, access to a trusted device or your recovery key will allow you to reset your Apple ID password and sign into your account. Here’s how to create a recovery key to reset your password and regain access:
- In Settings, tap your Name, then Sign-in & Security. You may need to enter your Apple ID password.
- Tap Account Recovery.
- Tap Recovery Key, turn On Recovery Key, then tap Use Recovery Key and enter your device passcode.
- Write down your recovery key and keep it in a safe place.
- To complete setup, confirm your recovery key by entering it or scanning it.
To use a recovery key:
- To change your Apple ID password, you need a trusted device or your recovery key.
- If you don’t have access to a trusted device or you’re locked out of your Apple ID, you need to provide your recovery key to reset your password and regain access to your account.
- When you change additional information about your Apple ID (for example, if you add a trusted phone number), you might be asked for your recovery key.
You also have the option to turn off your recovery key as well, by following the above steps. Note if you lose your recovery key and are unable to access through one of your trusted devices, your account will lock you out permanently.
Security is important to all of us, and this puts you in control of your account. This recovery option can aid in preventing an attacker from gaining access and control of your account. Stay safe my friends!
