Tuesday Tip: Forgot Your Readers? Your Phone Has You Covered

A hand with a magnifying glass sticking out of a smartphone screen. We’ve all been there. You’re settled into a cozy, dimly lit restaurant, the server hands you a menu, and you realize your reading glasses are sitting on the kitchen counter at home. Cue the squinting, the arm’s-length menu stretch, and the “I’ll have what she’s having.”

The good news you don’t need to do any of that. Your iPhone has a built-in magnifier, and with one quick setting you can open it just by tapping the back of your phone. It’s like borrowing your 20-year-old eyes for the evening.

Set it up:

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap Accessibility
  3. Tap Touch
  4. Scroll down and tap Back Tap
  5. Choose Triple Tap
  6. Select Magnifier

Back Tap works on iPhone 8 and newer. Android users, you have options too! Search your phone’s Settings for “Magnification” to set up a similar shortcut.

Anytime you need to read, tap the back of your phone three times, and your camera instantly turns into a magnifying glass. Zoom in, turn on the flashlight if the room is dark, and read the fine print with ease.

It isn’t just for menus. It’s handy for prescription bottles, receipts, serial numbers on the back of a router, and the tiny print on just about anything.
