In the age of streaming services with millions of songs at your fingertips, knowing where to start when searching for new music can feel overwhelming. Instead of sticking to familiar tunes, consider signing up for a website called 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. After registering, you will name your project and provide the email address where you will receive recommendations and reminders. You can also choose to receive recommendations on weekends or weekdays only.
The website generates its recommendations based on a book of the same name. This book compiles albums selected by a panel of music critics, recognized as some of the most influential albums from 1950 to the 2010s. As time goes on, several updated versions of the book emerge, primarily featuring rock and pop albums from the Western world.
Since signing up in September, I have enjoyed jazz albums, big band styles, and punk bands from the UK, discovering artists who have influenced the contemporary music I’ve loved for years. Joining this list has provided a low-effort way to expand my musical preferences, introducing me to one album a day.
