Think Twice Before Posting Photos of Your Keys

Close-up of a person's hand holding a house key.Let’s say you just moved into your new home, picked up your new car or landed a new office space for your business. Before you post the celebratory photo of your keys, know this: that innocent picture could hand a stranger a working copy of your key.

Researchers and cybersecurity experts have shown that a clear photo of a key contains enough detail in its shape, ridges and notches to recreate it. Someone can trace the image into a digital file and turn it into a working duplicate with a 3D printer, no lockpicking or break-ins required.

In one well-known case, reverse engineers took a published photo of TSA master keys and turned it into files that could open TSA-approved locks anywhere within days. Some keys even carry a code stamped right on them, and anyone can use that code to order an exact duplicate straight from the manufacturer.

A few simple habits can keep you safe:

  • Keep keys out of the shot when you celebrate a new home, car or office.
  • Watch what’s in the background of other photos.
  • Blur or crop any key that ends up in the frame.
  • Apply the same thinking to badges, boarding passes and house numbers.

This is a good reminder that security isn’t just firewalls and passwords. It’s a small habit, but it’s exactly the kind of everyday awareness that keeps people and businesses safe.
