Tuesday Tip – Traveling for the Holidays? Some Great Apps to Help

by Cheryl Sklar

If you’re traveling – or want to advise any of your loved ones who are traveling – this holiday season, here are a few great Apps that will help you.

This app makes your travel options easier, providing information that compares travel sites so you don’t have to.  The easy-to- read display helps you check flights, various types of accommodations, train schedules, and more.  It’s designed to reduce your Agony, which is a combination of price, number of stops and duration of flights.

MiFlight:

This is a crowdsourced travel app where the users can access the waiting times for the airport security checkpoints.  It will help you save time and significantly reduce your stress level while traveling – or waiting to travel.  Rave reviews show it to be quite accurate.  For another great tip on saving time at the airport, check out Alisa’s previous article about the TSA PreCheck Program.

TransferCar:

This app shows rental cars and RVs that need to be taken from one city to another. You drive them, free of charge, from point A to point B.  Sometimes the companies will even pay for the gas.  The only problem is that they don’t currently service the Atlanta area, which is a huge bummer because I got all excited about trying it out.  I emailed the company to find out when they will service our area.  As they just came to the States in August, they’re not ready for Atlanta yet but will be coming soon.  However, if you travel enough and want to drive a rental car or RV to and from a location where you plan to be, this is a great opportunity.  Fuel costs and insurance are often covered, too.  The catch is – there is no catch.  You have to be 18 years old with a valid driver’s license.  They are always looking for drivers, as this significantly helps reduce their freight costs to transfer vehicles.  Here are some examples of currently available vehicles and locations.  These change daily.  TransferCar is constantly expanding and hopes to cover the entire country in the next 12 months.

I hope some of these travel tips are helpful to you as you navigate through the crazy holiday season – or any time that you travel.  Enjoy your time off of work with family and friends and get some rest.  Here’s to a healthy, happy and prosperous 2015!
