Tuesday Tip: Kittysplit – Kitties and Money, What Could Be Better?

by Erin Kowtko

kittysplitI recently took a trip to Austin, Texas to visit several good friends. We rented a lovely home in the country, toured wineries and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, spending a decent sum of money on activities and items for the group. What could have been a confusing and drawn out breakdown of all the costs turned out to be easy breezy with the use of Kittysplit. Basically, it’s a calculator that has the word kitty in it, which obviously makes it far superior to all others.

To begin using Kittysplit yourself, first visit www.kittysplit.com. You will “create a Kitty” which is just a cool way of saying name your event. Once you’ve named your event, you can add participants to the group.

Next you will add the expenses. Click “Add expenses” and enter your first expense along with your chosen currency. You may choose to enter information about who paid for it, the total, and whether or not it’s intended to be split between everyone in the group. For example, if one of your group members wasn’t involved in an activity you can leave that person out so the amount is equally distributed between only those who participated in it.

If you need to amend an expense, it’s easy to adjust. Simply click on “View all expenses” and then select the expense you want to adjust or remove.

To alert your friends that they owe you money, you will click the purple button:

Clicking the button will send this secret link to your friends via their email address or through Facebook. They can access the page by clicking the link and they can settle their balances.

This tool is not app-based; you can access it on your phone, iPad, laptop or desktop. Best of all, it is free to use! Kittysplit offers a stress-free way to track expenses and coordinate accurate payments. Happy spending this holiday season!
