Tuesday Tip: Cynthia’s Corner – The Blueness

by David Gracey

My mother-in-law, Cynthia, called me up the other evening in a state of panic and said “David, it’s Cynthia.  When I touch the blueness, everything stops.”  My keen instincts served me well and I quickly assessed she was talking about a computer problem (I’m smart that way…plus she has a “computer problem” tone in her voice that is a dead giveaway).

Dying to know what the “blueness” was, I logged into her computer remotely so I could see her screen.

What I learned, however, was that someone had sent her a virus.  (Or more accurately, a virus infected someone’s computer, sent Cynthia an email and made it appear as if it came from someone she knew).  When she clicked on the email, it tried to launch a virus which was then blocked by her anti-virus software which froze up her computer (“everything stops”).  So the lessons here are 1) make sure your anti-virus software is up-to-date, and 2) emails that don’t have a subject line or content, regardless of who they are from, are almost always trouble.  So don’t click on the Blueness.
