Tuesday Tip: Chrome Removes Ad Blocking Capabilities

block pop up adsWhile statistics vary on the exact percentage, all agree that Google Chrome is the most popular browser (by far) for accessing the Internet from a computer. If you are one of these users, get ready to say goodbye to your ad blocking capabilities in 2023.

Google’s revenue relies heavily on advertising, so this isn’t all that shocking. For the last few years, Chrome users could block ads by using add-ons, called extensions. Starting in January 2023, Chrome will roll out new updates that will make these ad blocking extensions obsolete. Third-party developers are already looking for workarounds so Chrome users can continue to surf the web without pop-ups, but they will not be able to test them until the new updates are released.

How can you continue to enjoy the web, ad-free? You could swap to a new browser, such as Mozilla Firefox, which already has robust privacy and security built in. Firefox also has ad blocking extensions (such as uBlock), and other add-on features so you can continue to navigate the web frustration and ad-free.
