Tuesday Tip: Alternatives to Adobe Acrobat Pro

By Tony Coughlin

PDF documents are very commonly used in our world today. Most every document, contract, benefit form, etc., goes out and is returned in this form. The reason behind this is that PDFs are compatible across multiple platforms (it stands for “portable document format”), add document security, and are essentially “read-only.” The read-only nature of PDFs can be problematic, however, if you need to edit them.

Adobe Acrobat Pro is the industry standard for creation, editing, reviewing, and security of PDFs. Due to Adobe’s industry standard crown, it is also the most expensive ($179 + tax, per license). A client recently asked me about some alternatives, as her firm wanted to save some money. I have listed some alternatives to Adobe below. I have highlighted the top two and placed some honorable mentions along with their costs.

Nitro Pro 12: $159 + tax, per license

Nitro is cloud-based, which allows you to edit and secure documents from your web browser rather than a desktop program. This means you can work on PDFs from any machine and would only need one license for your desktop, laptop, or surface.

PDF Architect: $69 + tax, per license

This PDF editor allows you to buy tools for what you need rather than lump them in. The base license is $69, but if you add all the tools, it still totals at only $109. That will save you $50-$70.

Honorable Mentions:

Foxit PhantomPDF Business 9: $159 + tax, per license

Qoppa PDFStudio Pro 2018: $129 + tax, per license

iSkySoft PDF Editor 6 Professional: $100 + tax, per license

PDF Complete Office Edition 4.2: $59.95 + tax, per license

Happy editing!
