Tips from ABA TECHSHOW 2011

The Best of “60 Tips in 60 Minutes”

by Tony Rushin

I have never seen the annual 60 Tips in 60 Minutes presentation at the ABA TECHSHOW but I understand it’s very well attended and quite popular.  I’ve reviewed the presentation from TECHSHOW 2011 and have pulled out some of the best tips that I’ll highlight today and in upcoming blogs (in fact, I already highlighted one of the tips – Password Safe – in a recent blog).

First of all, I want to acknowledge the 4 presenters who put together the 2011 tips:

Andrew Z. Adkins III, President, Legal Technology Institute

Dominic Jaar, National Leader, Information Management & E-Discovery, KPMG Canada

Michael J. Morse, Law Offices of Michael J. Morse, P.C.

Nerino J. Petro Jr., Practice Management Advisor, Wisconsin Bar

Good IT Hygiene

Kinda boring but good practices.  Here’s 2 of the 60 Tips that are worth noting:

  •  CCleaner.  Removes unused files from your system – allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up disk space. It also includes a registry cleaner and contains no Spyware or Adware.  I downloaded and ran it just fine.  As a precaution, if you use the registry cleaner, choose the option first (I didn’t have a problem but always be prudent).  Here’s a good, brief Q&A from CCleaner users.
  • Defrag.  How often?  It depends how much you use and manipulate files.  Most lawyers, paralegals and staff will be doing this quite often so running defrag monthly would be a good idea.  Here’s some good perspective & advice.

This is the 13th of 23 blogs I’m writing to celebrate the Atlanta Association of Legal Administrators’ 23rd annual Business Partner Expo.  This year the Business Partner Expo will be held from 3:00 – 6:30 pm on August 17th at the Cobb Galleria.  Over 150 legal administrators and their guests are expected to be on hand learning about the latest technologies, finding solutions to business issues, uncovering emerging trends and developing valuable partnerships to help their law firms.  Already an AALA member?  I’ll see you there!  Not an AALA member?  Give me a call at 404.943.0800 x133 to discuss how you might be able to attend as a guest!
